Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County is a reality television television series produced by MTV from 2004 to 2006 . It comprises three seasons with a total of 43 episodes.

Laguna Beach ( California ) is a wealthy and on the coast of Orange County's location, small town. The series accompanies some young people growing up there in their everyday lives.

The subtitle "The Real Orange County" is an allusion to the series OC, California , which started a year earlier , which also takes place in Orange County and which, unlike Laguna Beach, is fictional.

action

Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County

All three seasons accompany the senior year of Laguna Beach High School . The seasons therefore end shortly after the graduation ceremony. Important events in addition to the graduation ceremony are the Winter Formals and the Prom .

The first season contains 11 episodes and was broadcast from September 28, 2004. It is told from the perspective of Lauren Conrad. The season essentially focuses on the love triangle between her, Stephen Colletti, and Kristin Cavallari. The other people named in the opening credits (Trey, Christina, Morgan, Talan and Lo) hardly play a role. A fade-in at the beginning of each episode indicates that the plot of the season extends over six months and that the people and events are real, not fictional.

At the beginning of the season it becomes clear that Lauren and Kristin are not friends. Lauren is interested in Stephen, but he is more attracted to Kristin, although he is sometimes put off by Kristin's behavior. They're both a couple by the end of the season, but with graduation from high school, the relationship comes to a point as Stephen moves to San Francisco to study. Lauren has also decided to study at the same university and is therefore close to Stephen.

The second season contains 18 episodes and began on July 25, 2005. The narrator this time is Kristin Cavallari. In contrast to the previous season, the plot doesn't just focus on a love affair. The story of the first season about Lauren, Kristin and Stephen moves into the background with the introduction of new actors.

Lauren dropped out of college in San Francisco and returned to Laguna Beach. Stephen continues to study in San Francisco and comes to Laguna Beach every now and then. He meets with both Lauren and Kristin. Although a relationship with Lauren seems more promising, he is more interested in Kristin. Kristin lets him understand that she is not interested in a relationship with him. It later turns out that Lauren is no longer interested in him either. Instead, she meets up with Jason Wahler and the two become a couple. Their relationship is further shown in the follow-up series The Hills .

Jason Wahler is introduced as a new couple on the series along with Jessica Smith. The relationship is already a bit shattered, so Jason shows interest in Alex Murrel at the beginning of the season. During the season, Jason breaks up with Jessica, and he and Alex become a couple. But this relationship also ends after a short time, so that towards the end of the season there is a relationship between Jason and Lauren.

Talan Torriero, Taylor Cole and Kristin from the first season form another network of relationships. Talan and Taylor have known each other for a long time. Talan's interest in Taylor is not returned by her, so he tries Kristin, which is unsuccessful.

The third season contains 16 episodes and began on August 16, 2006. The episode summaries are narrated by Tessa Keller. At the beginning of the episodes, it is shown that the plot extends over eight months. The people from the first season and from the second season (with the exception of Jessica) do not matter.

Essentially, the plot revolves around two cliques around Tessa Keller and Kyndra Mayo, who used to be friends and no longer like each other. Tessa, Kyndra and Jessica have an affair with Cameron Brinkman over the course of the season. These and other relationships are each short-lived.

Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County

The series consists of two seasons. The first season contains eight episodes and was broadcast from August 13, 2007. The series accompanies friends Chrissy Schwartz (narrator), Sasha Dunlap, Allie Stockton, Samantha Kuhns, Clay Adler, Grant Newman and Chase Cornwell over a period of six months. As in Laguna Beach, the plot ends shortly after the high school graduation. The actors' parents are a little more involved in the plot, in contrast to Laguna Beach , where the parents were barely visible. The plot is about the relationship between the couple Chrissy and Clay and the couple Allie and Chase.

The second season began on December 12, 2007 and contained four episodes. Unlike Laguna Beach , only a few new actors are introduced with the new season. The focus remains on the cast of the first season and in particular on the relationship between Chrissy and Clay.

Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad (born February 1, 1986 in Laguna Beach , California ) is the actress who has benefited most from the series' popularity. She was involved in the first two seasons of Laguna Beach and then decided to pursue a career in the fashion industry. She had her life filmed by MTV in the first five seasons of the follow-up series The Hills .

She received the Teen Choice Award four times in a row for her role in The Hills between 2006 and 2009 . She appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue , where she interned herself. In November 2008 she appeared on the cover of Cosmopolitan .

During the series The Hills she brought out her own fashion collection, which was sold in over 500 boutiques in the USA. In addition, she appeared in advertisements for Mark cosmetics and AT&T . The Forbes magazine estimated her income in 2007 and 2008 to $ 1.5 million. In 2009 she published a novel based on her own life.

Kristin Cavallari

Kristin Cavallari (born January 5, 1987 in Denver , Colorado ) is the second actress to star in two seasons of Laguna Beach . In contrast to Lauren Conrad, she tried to start an acting career after Laguna Beach . She has had a number of moderation appearances (e.g. UPN's Get This Party Started ), as well as a number of roles in TV films and appearances as a supporting actress on the series CSI: NY and Veronica Mars . She also appeared on the cover of Seventeen and Teen People Magazine in October 2005 . When Lauren Conrad left The Hills , she was hired as the new leading actress.

Stephen Colletti

Stephen Colletti (born February 13, 1986 in Laguna Beach , California ) played the leading role in the first two seasons of Laguna Beach . Like Kristin Cavallari, he decided to pursue an acting career. His biggest success so far was his supporting role in the One Tree Hill series .

Other actors

Essentially, all other cast members, especially those from season three of Laguna Beach and Newport Harbor , were not offered any additional roles. This also applies to Jessica Smith, who, like Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari, appeared in two seasons. Jason Wahler starred in The Hills season one because of his relationship with Lauren Conrad . Talan Torriero from the second season got hold of a few roles in small film productions.

Audience ratings

Right from the start, the series was a rated success in the target group of 12 to 24-year-old viewers, which is important for MTV. The first season of the series reached an average of 2.2 million viewers. During the second season of 2005, the series achieved ratings of 3.1 million viewers in the United States. A massive advertising campaign in which MTV advertised the series in 2,200 cinemas with a three-minute advertisement ensured its success. Leading actors Lauren Conrad, Kristin Cavallari and Stephen Colletti became celebrities after just one season and received acting offers.

In the third season, the quotas have decreased. This was attributed to the departure of the three main characters mentioned above, which viewers had become accustomed to over the first two seasons. The decline in ratings meant that a planned fourth season in Laguna Beach was not realized. Instead, a spin-off called Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County ran on MTV from mid-August 2007 . The series is set in the city of Newport Beach , which is also in Orange County.

Production details and authenticity

The idea behind the series was a reality TV version of Beverly Hills, 90210 and comes from executive producer Liz Gateley. Together with co-producer Tony DiSanto and cameraman Hisham Abed, quality guidelines for the optics and music were set in order to avoid the usual impression of reality TV series. Instead of handheld cameras that produce shaky images, Panasonic DVCPR050 cameras with a special lens are used to ensure the high-gloss optics. In contrast to other reality TV series, pop songs are used to support the scenes. Interviews were also conducted with applicants prior to the start of the series in order to identify the leaders of the youth cliques .

There was only permission to film at Laguna Beach High School in the first episode , but it was soon withdrawn. Therefore, many scenes take place in the private rooms of the performers. According to actress Lauren Conrad, MTV initially gave the impression that it was a documentary. Another reason for the revocation of the shooting permit was an incident at the 2004 Super Bowl where Janet Jackson's chest was exposed during the MTV halftime show .

While some critics as well as viewers describe the series as posed, the producers essentially deny this. Action and dialogue are not given. However, one would have asked the actors to wait with important discussions until the cameras are on site or to go to places for which they have permission to film. The only manipulation are the decisions about the events shown in the series.

Reactions and consequences

The citizens and especially the parents in Laguna Beach were not enthusiastic about the portrayal of their city and the supposedly negative influence of the series on the young people in Laguna Beach. While the citizens would see their city as “a place of culture and art”, MTV shows more spoiled young people who “between their trips to Mexico” deal with their love affairs and “constantly celebrate parties”. Some parents also stated that the series encouraged young people to consume alcohol and tobacco. Police suspected that some teenagers gave incorrect addresses to enroll at Laguna Beach High School . In 2005 there was a new high of 300 registrations. One consequence of this was increased traffic around the high school. The teenagers' hope was not only to be able to see the stars of the series, but also to be cast themselves. Local shops also saw an increase in the number of tourists who came to town to see the stars of the series.

In return, some parents felt that the response to the show was exaggerated. That way, no hordes of children would come to town, and the actors would have benefited from the series too. The fact that MTV only shows the teenagers at parties is simply a consequence of the denial of filming permission on the school premises. And some parents are responsible for the ban.

Reviews

The New York Times foresaw the drop in ratings for season three. In her criticism, Virginia Heffernan suspected that Laguna Beach would not gain any new fans with the third season. The reason for this is the main character Tessa, who would bring "too much reality" (because of an illness that is mentioned in her biography) into the "perpetual sunshine" that would have distinguished the series in previous seasons. Tessa, who fell out with Kyndra, is not a member of the leading clique and is therefore simply "uncool".

She describes the plot of the first two seasons as easy to follow and without many changing elements.
