The Nianimaru Forest Park (spelling variant: Niani Maru Forest Park ) is a forest area in the West African state of Gambia .

topography

The 607 hectare forest area is located in the Central River Region in the Nianija district and, like the other forest parks in Gambia, was established on January 1, 1954. The Nianimaru Forest Park is about nine kilometers northwest of the towns of Wassu and Kuntaur as the crow flies, and the Kahi Badi Forest Park is ten kilometers to the west .

The approximately 3.8 long and 1.8 km wide area is bounded by the right northern bank of the Gambia River . In the immediate vicinity, in a south-easterly direction, is the inland island of Bird Island in the river.

Attractions

The Nianimaru Forest Park is located in a region where the numerous Senegambian stone circles can be found, including the stone circles of Niani Maru .

history

In the 15th century, the Portuguese , the first Europeans to be on the Gambia River in the history of the Gambia , maintained numerous bases. Among other things, they had a trading post called Nyani Maru , the forest area takes its name from this place.
