Nicholas Edward True, Baron True CBE (* 31 July 1951 ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party , which since 2011 member of the House of Lords is.

Life

Studies and party official

After attending Nottingham High School , True studied at the Peterhouse of the University of Cambridge , from which he graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then worked in the research department in the party headquarters of the Conservative Party between 1975 and 1982 and also completed postgraduate studies at Peterhouse, which he completed in 1978 with a Master of Arts (MA). He was then assistant to the deputy chairman of the Conservative Tories before he was special advisor to the then Minister of Social Security, Norman Fowler , between 1982 and 1986 .

In 1986, True took over the post of director of the political working group at Conservative Party headquarters. He was then from 1991 to 1995 deputy head of the political working group of Prime Minister John Major and from 1995 to the defeat of the Tories in the general election on May 1, 1997 special advisor and speechwriter to Prime Minister Major. For his many years of service, he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1993 .

Local politician and member of the House of Lords

In addition to his professional activities in the Conservative Party, he began his political career in local politics in the mid-1980s and was a member of the council of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames for the first time between 1986 and 1990 .

In 1997 he became private secretary of the then leader of the Conservative Opposition Group ( Leader of the Opposition ) in the House of Lords, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 7th Marquess of Salisbury . He held this position until 2010 and was therefore also an employee of the successor to the Marquess of Salisbury, Thomas Galbraith, 2nd Baron Strathclyde , who was opposition leader in the House of Lords between December 1998 and May 2010.

Since 1998, True has been a member of the council of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames again and was there between 2002 and 2006, first deputy opposition leader and then until 2010 opposition leader. Since 2010 he has been Chairman of the Council of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

He was raised to the nobility on December 23, 2010 as a Life Peer with the title Baron True , of East Sheen in the County of Surrey and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .
