Nickel (IV) oxide is a chemical compound from the group of metal oxides and nickel compounds .
Extraction and presentation
Nickel (IV) oxide (NiO 2 · nH 2 O) can be prepared by oxidation of nickel (II) hydroxide with persulfates are dissolved in water produced.
properties
Nickel (IV) oxide crystallizes in a distorted cadmium iodide layer structure ( space group C 2 / m (space group no. 12) , lattice parameters a = 4.875 Å , b = 2.814 Å, c = 5.582 Å, β = 125.8 °) .
Nickel (IV) oxide and its hydrates are chemically unstable (decomposes when heated and in contact with water) and are a powerful oxidizing agent . It does not burn itself, but it increases the risk of fire if it comes into contact with flammable substances and can significantly promote an existing fire.
use
Nickel (IV) oxide is used as an oxidizing agent for the conversion of alcohols into acids and the aliphatic hydrazones into the corresponding diazoalkanes .
safety instructions
Like many nickel compounds, nickel (IV) oxide is classified as carcinogenic.
