Nicolae Simionescu
Nicolae Simionescu (born June 27, 1926 in Bucharest , Romania , † February 6, 1995 ) was a Romanian physician and cell biologist .
Simionescu graduated from the Saint Andrew Lyceum in 1944 and then studied medicine at the University of Bucharest . After studying surgery, he taught in the clinic of Professor Ion Jurvara. In 1957 he moved to the endocrinological institute as head of morphology , where he worked until 1970 and where he also met his future wife Maya Simionescu . He moved to the United States in 1970 , where he worked in the laboratory of George Emil Palade at Rockefeller University (1970–1973) and then at Yale University (1973–1974). There he and Maya worked on new methods to fix tissue and methods to isolate cardiac capillaries .
In 1979 he founded the Institute for Cellular Biology and Pathology in Romania, which today bears his name. Together with his wife Maya, he contributed several chapters to histology books and in 1990 both Nicolae and Maya Simionescu were inducted into the Romanian Academy of Sciences (with full membership in 1991). In 1994 Simionescu was elected Vice President of the Academy of Life Sciences. He died unexpectedly in 1995.
