Niedernzell is a hamlet in the Gutenzell-Hürbel community in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia .

location

Niedernzell is located on the right side of the Rottal in the higher eastern part of the gravel terrace and slab landscape of the Untere Riss and Iller , which is summarized under the name of wooden sticks . The Niedernzellerbach, the Kohlplattenbach, the Ilgenweiherbach and a body of water called Wasserstichgraben, as the right tributaries of the Rot, are created on the hamlet's boundary . The district road 7580, coming from Gutenzell, connects Niedernzell with Schwendi . In Niedernzell there are also remains of Ametshausen Castle, which was destroyed in the 13th century .

history

The origin of the hamlet is unclear. In 1449 the name appears as “Nydernzelle” in the documents of the neighboring Gutenzell women's monastery (1238 “Cella Die”, 1267 “Bona Cella”). In the late Middle Ages, Niedernzell consisted of a single farm. In 1701 there were four Leiblehen farms with 70-80 Jauchert and one farm with 40 Jauchert. During the reign of Abbess Maria Alexandra Zimmermann (1759–1776), daughter of the Bavarian plasterer and master builder Dominikus Zimmermann , the monastery received blood jurisdiction from the Upper Bailiwick of Swabia . In this blood court district Niedernzell is noted, next to Bollsberg, Dissenhausen, Weitenbühl and Huggenlaubach. In 1806 Niedernzell was incorporated into the Kingdom of Württemberg . The hamlet has been part of the Gutenzell-Hürbel community since 1975.

economy

Agriculture is a defining trade in Niedernzell. The biogas plants built by individual farmers in Niedernzell after the turn of the millennium cover the electricity needs of over 300 households.

Buildings

The Wendelinus Chapel was commissioned by the monastery in 1746, during the tenure of Maria Bernarda von Donnersberg (1718–1747). The simple beaver-tail-roofed nave ends in a three-eighth choir. There is an octagonal roof turret with an onion hood above the non-easted entrance portal . In the four sound openings there are bells but no tower clock . In the interior there are baroque stalls and a Christ at the pillar of torture from the 18th century. The altar contains a plastic representation of the Holy Family with God the Father, around whom angels and putti crowd.

Regular events

The Wendelinusritt is an equestrian procession to the Wendelinus Chapel, which takes place annually on the third Sunday in September with up to 800 procession riders in up to twenty-seven groups of blood riders and eight music bands and fanfares . It was revived in 1947 by the then local pastor of Gutenzell Erwin Sonntag. He brought a Wendelinus relic from the tomb of St. Wendelin , the Wendalinus basilica in St. Wendel . After the blood rides in Weingarten and Bad Wurzach, the procession is the third largest equestrian procession in Upper Swabia .
