Life
Schiøttz-Jensen was born in 1855 as the son of the Vordingborg cantor Christen Jensen and his wife Louise Andrea Schiøttz. He first completed a commercial apprenticeship. In 1873 he was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, where he studied with Frederik Vermehren , Niels Simonsen , Julius Exner and Jørgen Roed . He took his exam there in 1879. In 1882/83 he was for further studies at the Académie Colarossi , a private art academy in Paris.
He undertook several study trips, in addition to his stay in Paris from 1882–83, he visited Italy in 1886. Further larger tours took him to Italy and Tunisia (North Africa) in 1891 and to Rome again in 1911.
Schiøttz-Jensen first exhibited in 1880 and then continuously at the famous Charlottenborg exhibition in Copenhagen. He was also a frequent exhibitor at other important Danish exhibitions, such as the exhibition of the Artists' Association of November 18th and the Artists Autumn Exhibitions, both in Copenhagen. For his work he won the Academy Art Prize twice (1886 and 1895) and was awarded the 1st Class Annual Medal in 1895.
At first Schiøttz-Jensen impressed with his very realistic street scene paintings, later he turned to landscape motifs, especially his Italian paintings were based on the romantic ideas of the 19th century.
Niels Frederik Schiøttz-Jensen was married from January 2, 1886 to Augusta Salomon (born May 3, 1862 in Copenhagen, † December 25, 1956 in Lund / Sweden).
