Frederik Vermehren
Frederik Vermehren (born May 12, 1823 in Ringsted on Zealand; † January 10, 1910 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish painter of the late 19th century.
Life
Vermehren was the son of Peter Frederik Nikolai Vermehren (1793–1869) and his wife Sofie Amalie (née Franck, 1801–1846). He was a student of Hans Harder (1792–1873) in Sorö , attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and then became a student of Jørgen Roed (1808–1888). 1855–1857, 1862 and 1878 he traveled to Italy and Paris. Vermehren became a member of the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen in 1864 and a teacher at the painting school there in 1865. From 1873 to 1901 he was a professor at the academy. In 1892 he was appointed commander of the Dannebrog Order and from 1890 to 1896 he was a member of the state commission for the procurement of works of art. He is counted as part of the Eckersberg School and is considered the last prominent representative of the Golden Age in Denmark . He painted landscapes, interiors and also portraits. His pictures hang in all important collections in Denmark, but also in Norway and Sweden.
Family
On July 7, 1857, he married Thomasine Ludvigne (nee Grüner, December 21, 1833 to February 26, 1877) a daughter of Judicial Councilor Thomas Ludvig Grüner (1782–1844) and his wife Petrine Elisabeth (née Beyer, 1808–1863). His sons Gustav (December 28, 1863– September 2, 1931) and Sophus (August 28, 1866–1950) also became famous painters in Denmark.
