Life

Niels Thomsen attended the Middle Greenland High School GUX , which he graduated in 2004, where he received a prize from the NunaFonden for his good performance. He then studied social sciences at the University of Greenland until 2009 , completing the course under the standard period of study and again being honored by the Greenland Employers' Association for his very good performance.

He took part in the parliamentary elections in Greenland in 2009 and was elected to Inatsisartut with the second most votes in Democraatit and the seventh most in total . In the following two years he sat in various committees, including a. the finance committee. In 2011 he ran for the Folketing , but received only the third most votes, so that the two mandates went to Sara Olsvig and Doris Jakobsen . In the same year he fell out with his party over an issue involving the construction of artificial turf pitches in Greenland. At the end of November, Niels Thomsen announced his retirement from politics to take up a position as director of Halibut Greenland . He was succeeded in parliament by Jørgen-Ole Nyboe Nielsen . In addition, Niels Thomsen also left the party for which he was previously political spokesman . In 2013, in addition to his position as Director at Halibut Greenland, he was appointed Chairman of the Supervisory Board at KNI . He was also chairman of the board of directors at North Atlantic Seafood . In 2020 he resigned from Halibut Greenland.

He resigned from KNI in 2018 to run for the 2018 parliamentary election in Greenland . In the election he received the second most votes of all candidates and thus about six hundred more than Prime Minister Kim Kielsen, for example . In June he was appointed leader of the Democraatit party, succeeding Randi Vestergaard Evaldsen . In March 2019, he took sick leave for an indefinite period. Finally, on November 26, 2019, he resigned with immediate effect and withdrew from politics one more time. After his stress-related vacation, he justified this with the strong personal hostility with which he did not want to be confronted as a politician.

He has three sons with his wife, Pilunnguaq. He speaks Greenlandic, Danish and English.
