Sneeze chain
The Niesen chain is an approx. 21 km long mountain range in the Bernese Oberland between the Diemtigtal and the Engstligental . The chain begins near Wimmis and ends in the immediate vicinity of Lenk . The name of the chain comes from the Niesen ( 2368 m above sea level ), which is its northernmost link and at the same time the only summit accessible to tourists (a funicular railway leads from Mülenen to the Niesen). The Niesen is by no means the highest point in the mountain range. This is located at the southern end of the chain and is formed by the Albristhorn ( 2762 m above sea level ).
A special feature of the chain is its special topography. While on the eastern side the cultivated alpine pastures are in wide hollows and valleys and the western ridge foothills of the summits are narrow and heavily forested in the lower part, the character of the terrain on the western side is exactly the opposite. The alpine pastures and hamlets are on the so-called harrows or spits, which are quite wide here. These spits are separated by the deep rocky trenches of the streams, so that there are no continuous roads. The Spissen settlements belong to the municipality of Frutigen , from Adelboden downwards it is Rinderwald, Ladholz, Linter, Kratzern, Gempelen, Zwischenbäch, and Ried.
