Nietoperek ( German Nipter ) is a village in Poland in the Lubusz Voivodeship and part of the Międzyrzecz municipality . The current Polish place name translates as "bats".
Nietoperek Nature Reserve
The Nipter Loop was part of an important fortress during World War II. After the war, the bunkers of border protection fortifications III and the Oder-Warthe-Bogen fortress front were left to their own devices. This facility with a total length of about 65 km and a connecting tunnel of over 30 km, in which even a narrow-gauge railway ran, was not closed after the World War. The Polish army used the facilities until 1957. Then the plant was left to its own devices.
Since they were largely undisturbed in the facilities and found favorable conditions, numerous bats settled . Up to 30,000 bats of twelve species have been identified. The bats spend their winter dormancy here and sometimes come to Nietoperek from distances of up to 260 km. The most common species are the great mouse- eared bats , the pug bats and the water bats .
In 1988 the Polish Minister of the Environment officially designated the facilities as a protected area . Tourists can only visit a certain part of the complex with a guide.
