Today's desolation

geography

Nievoldhagen is located in the forest between Behnsdorf , Eschenrode , Hödingen and Hörsingen . The way to the desert was signposted in 2006 on the road from Behnsdorf to Hörsingen. The Nievoldhagen area is in the Hödingen district, which politically belongs to the city of Oebisfelde-Weferlingen . A small part of the forest in which the desert is located was designated as a natural forest cell , that is, the forest is left to itself in a demarcated area , it is not managed.

history

Nievoldhagen was once a village settlement and became desolate around 1540. The forest place is called Niewoldhagen. He was also called Niewoldt or just Hagen. Originally the forest was called Nippeltshagen. The settlement was destroyed by war and today only the foundation wall of a building can be seen. The ruins were uncovered in 1897. This comes from a chapel that was also the meeting house of the Eschenrode Calendar Brotherhood, which was documented in 1485. The former importance of the ruin is interpreted differently.

Angerbornspring

Today in Nievoldhagen still forest are church services held.

Back then, the residents probably got their water from the Angerbornspring spring, which is still present today and is surrounded by stones.

Nivoldhagen legend

Three shepherds, one from Behnsdorf , one from Hödingen and one from Eschenrode , looked after the pigs in the small oaks , as the acorn fattening was good and the fields and pastures were grazed. Suddenly they saw something flashing in the hollow that the pigs had dug up. Upon closer inspection, they recognized this shimmering something as a bell. They knew that this could only have come from the desert town of Niewoldthagen. The question now arose what should be done with her. All three shepherds had found them, none of them had a privilege. They decided to run to their hometowns and get a vehicle to take the bell away. The first person to arrive at the site with a team should be able to bring the bell to his home village. The bell now reached Eschenrode, because the Eschenrode shepherd met a team on the way that immediately drove back with him to recover the bell. Now the fifteen hundredweight bronze bell from 1511 hangs in the church tower in Eschenröder and always shouts: "Never - wold, never - wold ..."

Nievoldhagen bell

This legend is also mentioned in the Eschenröder Heimatlied .

Today the bell still hangs in the church tower of Eschenrode and rings for a few minutes every day at 6:00 p.m.

The ruin

The walls are 60 to 70 cm thick. The access on the north side can be seen; two larger stone posts were found on both sides of the entrance during the uncovering. One has broken off, the other is 1.80 m long. You can still see the recesses in which the iron hinges may have been embedded. An old key and a Marian coin from 1554 were found outside the walls.
