Victim of right-wing violence

Nihat Yusufoğlu (* 1974 in Turkey ; † 28. December 1990 in Hachenburg , Rhineland-Palatinate ) was an immigrant from Turkey to Germany Kurd , the same age from a neo-Nazi - skinhead was stabbed. He was one of the first victims of right-wing extremist violence in the Federal Republic of Germany after reunification. Yusufoğlu was the first of up to twelve Turkish victims of right-wing extremist violence in Germany to be mentioned in the Turkish media after reunification. According to the Rhein-Zeitung, his murder sparked a “broad debate about racism and neo-Nazism” in the region.

origin

In Turkey, members of the Yusufoğlu family had been persecuted as Kurds. One of Nihat's uncle and grandfather had been killed. The eleven family members living in Hachenburg had applied for asylum in Germany.

Sequence of events

Even in the run-up to the murder, the Yusufoğlu family had been attacked by neo-Nazis for weeks with insults and threats. These had their meeting point at a parking garage opposite the Yusufoğlus house. On December 28, 1990, a total of six boneheads gathered in front of the house and chanted "Kanaken out", whereupon Nihad and two of his brothers stepped out and an argument developed. The 20-year-old skinhead Alexander T. murdered Nihad Yusufoğlu with a knife stab through the back in the heart. After the murder, the house of the Yusufoğlu family was pelted with stones, family members were threatened and insulted, and the children were beaten. But there was also a human chain in memory of the victim. The family left the place after the murder, which was not easy due to their status as asylum seekers and the associated residence obligation .

process

According to the public prosecutor's office in Koblenz, the murderer T. belonged to the right-wing extremist "Taunus Front", as whose "ringleader" he had described himself to the police. T. was known to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution from supra-regional right-wing extremist marches. An investigation was already underway against him because of the use of unconstitutional license plates . Although he had been visited by skinheads from Saarbrücken who were prepared to use violence shortly before the crime, he claimed in court that he had already turned away from the skinhead scene at the time of the crime. In the TAZ , the public prosecutor's office was accused of trying to downplay the act into an apolitical stupid-boy prank , although the main perpetrator was even known to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The perpetrator was sentenced to six years in juvenile detention for manslaughter . The court remained with the verdict under the demands of the public prosecutor. In his justification, the juvenile judge did not assume that the act was right-wing and racist, for which he was criticized in the reporting.

aftermath

The case attracted attention in the German, Kurdish and Turkish press and is on the Amadeu Antonio Foundation's list of fatalities . In addition, the description of the case is part of two traveling exhibitions . The act or the conviction of the perpetrator are mentioned in 1990 and 1992 in the reports on the protection of the constitution by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The importance that the murder had in the region is also measured in the listing of the case in the Westerwälder Chronicle of the 20th century. On the 20th anniversary of the fatal attack on Nihat Yusufoğlu, there was a demonstration in the city of Hachenburg, in which over 300 people, including the city's mayor Peter Klöckner and the dean Martin Fries, took part.
