Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Zukanow (born March 22, 1965 in Lipowo , Kaliningrad Oblast ) is a Russian politician.

Nikolai Zukanov graduated from the University of Privatization and Entrepreneurship in Moscow in 1999 with a law degree and in 2002 from the Tupolev State Technical University in Kazan . He has the degree of candidate of psychology .

Zukanow worked for a few years as a lawyer in the private sector until he was elected political head of Gusev Rajon in 2005 . From 2009 to 2010 he was chairman of the “Council of Local Authorities of Kaliningrad Oblast”. Since 2010 he has been chairman of the Kaliningrad Oblast Organization of the United Russia party .

On August 23, 2010, Nikolai Zukanow was elected by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to succeed Georgi Boos in the office of Governor of Kaliningrad Oblast. A week later he was confirmed by the local Duma and officially installed in office on September 28, 2010. On September 13, 2015, he was confirmed in office in the first direct election of the governor in 15 years. He received 70.4% of the valid votes cast by 38.6% of the eligible voters. On July 28, 2016, he was dismissed from his post by Russian President Vladimir Putin and at the same time appointed as the President's Plenipotentiary in the Northwestern Federal District. Alexander Beglow succeeded him on December 25, 2017 , while Zukanov was appointed Assistant to the President for Local Self-Government Issues. On June 26, 2018, Putin reappointed him as his plenipotentiary - this time in the Urals Federal District .

In July 2011, 1,200 Kaliningraders wrote an open letter to the then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. They lamented the increasing nepotism in the regional administration since Nikolai Zukanov became governor of Kaliningrad and called for the entire regional government to be dismissed.

Zukanow has been married for the second time since 2010. He has a son from his first marriage: Juri (* 1987).
