The Kotzenbüller Nikolaikirche on the Kirchwarft

The Nikolaikirche in Kotzenbüll on Eiderstedt is a church building of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . Your entrance door is the oldest church door in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

There was probably a chapel on the Kirchwarft in Kotzenbüll as early as 1300. The oldest preserved part of today's church building is the brick church tower from the 14th century.

Between 1488 and 1495, the wealthy Kotzenbüller farmers had the small chapel replaced by the late Gothic brick building that is oversized for a village church today . The fact that Duke Friedrich visited the construction site with his mother in 1492 testifies to the importance of the place at that time, as does the consecration by Bishop Eggert Dürkop . The floor plan is cruciform with a wide nave, an almost equally wide semicircular choir and two short transepts. The doors of the south portal, decorated with late Gothic folding work , date from the time it was built . They are the oldest preserved church doors in Schleswig-Holstein.

From 1857 to 1859 the church was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style. The original vault in the choir was replaced by a continuous wooden beam ceiling. Since the surrounded by a moat mound does not form a solid foundation for such a large building, the church is in danger of collapsing now acute. Support beams stabilize the ceiling.

Due to the siege of the nearby Tönning fortress in 1713, the community suffered great losses. Until then, the then prosperous parish had even been able to finance two clergymen, a pastor and a deacon. Since then the population has been falling. In 1835 Kotzenbüll only had 275 inhabitants. Today Kotzenbüll belongs to a parish together with Tönning and Kating .

inventory

The oldest piece of equipment is the baptismal font, which was probably already in the previous building. The octagonal baptismal font is made of black Namur marble and is decorated with four heads.

The three-winged carved altar, the triumphal cross group , the choir stalls and the lectern were created for today's church around 1500 . The center of the altar shrine from 1506 contains a crucifixion rich in figures. The side wings show further scenes from the Passion of Christ . The shrine was surrounded by baroque tendrils in 1752.

The pulpit dates from the late 16th century. The four sides of the pulpit basket show Jesus' baptism, the erection of the brazen serpent , the crucifixion and the resurrection as well as the donor's coat of arms. The sound cover is baroque and dates from 1752. The three epitaphs also came into the church in the late 16th century.

organ

The organ on the west gallery is the third organ in the church. Around 1500 the new building received its first organ. In 1740, the organ builder Johann Hinrich Klapmeyer repaired it and added a pedal . In the course of the major renovation in 1859, the organ builder from Tönningen, Johann Heinrich Färber (1820–1888), who had studied at Marcussen & Søn in Aabenraa, redesigned the organ. The neo-Gothic organ front was created by JF Holm. Färber integrated the pipes from the previous organs. The work still has six registers from the oldest organ from around 1500, and four other registers date from 1740. In 1958 the organ was renovated for the last time. However, it has not been played for decades. Instead, a Kleuker organ is set up in the nave .
