Löwenstern was born as the son of the Lübeck businessman Westphal in Hamburg and, according to the records of the Rostock botanist and university historian Paul Falkenberg, is said to have adopted the name " von Löwenstern " before the start of studies . From 1763 he studied law at the University of Bützow and from Easter 1766 at the Georg-August University of Göttingen . In Bützow he was in 1768 when Adolf Friedrich Trendelenburg Dr. jur. PhD. Löwenstern was initially a member of the law faculty and from 1774 until his untimely death he was an associate professor of law at the University of Bützow. He was one of the few professors at the university who had studied outside of Mecklenburg. Paul Falkenberg notes on his death that he "died of hunger and hardship."
