Nikolaus Koch (publisher, 1908)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus Koch (born July 18, 1908 in Trier ; † March 19, 1982 ibid) was a German publisher and grandson of the eponymous founder of the Trierischer Volksfreund newspaper .

Life

Koch studied at the technical college for book printers in Heidelberg and at the State Academy for Graphic Arts in Leipzig and then completed an apprenticeship in his father's printing company.

After the early death of his father Nikola Koch , Koch took over the publishing house in 1935 at the age of 27 and played a decisive role in shaping the Trierischer Volksfreund (TV) over the next 60 years . He received support from his uncle Peter Koch , a fearless journalist who vehemently refused to bring the people's friend into line. As a result, however, the newspaper was banned and expropriated by the National Socialists in 1938. Koch was also excluded from the Reich Press Chamber as "politically unsustainable". Therefore, no edition was printed between 1938 and 1946.

By continuing to use the reopened newspaper printer “Volksfreund-Druckerei Nikolaus Koch”, he was able to put the reopening of TV on a stable economic foundation after the war. From April 10, 1946, the newspaper appeared again under license from the French occupying power - initially under the title Trierische Volkszeitung . Soon afterwards, the company began to soar economically. After retiring from the company, Koch spent the rest of his life in Rothhaus (near Orenhofen ). He died in March 1982 at the age of 73.

Koch largely determined the direction of the newspaper. After his death in 1982, his wife Luise Koch (1907–1993) managed the Volksfreund company until 1993 when it took over the Saarbrücker Zeitung group of companies , which is majority owned by the Holtzbrinck group .

Nikolaus Koch Foundation

On Koch's initiative, his wife Luise Koch (1907–1993) founded the Nikolaus Koch Foundation in 1993, which

  • the promotion of vocational training, training, advanced training by non-profit institutions, schools, corporations under public law in the former administrative district of Trier as well as the University of Trier and the University of Trier, Trier location
  • and the support of orphanages and institutions for the physically and / or mentally handicapped in the former administrative district of Trier

dedicates.

The foundation of the foundation became possible because Nikolaus Koch had appointed his wife as sole heir and she appointed the foundation as her sole heir. The foundation is located on Dietrichstrasse near Nikolaus-Koch-Platz .

Awards

In 1969, Koch was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for “building a free and independent daily press” . For the special support for a new building from the Trier Theater , the council of elders in his hometown honored him in 1965 with the award of the seal of honor by the city of Trier.
