Nikolaus Varnbüler (born December 12, 1519 in Lindau (Lake Constance) , † August 20, 1604 in Tübingen ) was a Württemberg jurist and diplomat , professor at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .

Life

Varnbuler was born as the son of the Mayor of Lindau, Johannes Varnbuler (* 1464 in St. Gallen ; † 1545 in Lindau) and the Augsburg patrician daughter Agathe Meuting (* 1484 in Augsburg; † 1562 in Lindau). He was a grandson of the bailiff and mayor of St. Gallen, Ulrich Varnbüler (* 1432, † 1495).

Nikolaus Varnbüler studied from 1537 for 3 years at the academy in Strasbourg , 1541 in Leuven ( see History of the University of Leuven ), 1542 at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate in 1544 at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen as a Doctor iuris utriusque . Varnbüler initially worked as a lawyer. In 1554 he followed a call to the Eberhard-Karls-Universität and took over the chair for Roman law , which he held until 1594. In 1558 and 1578/79 Nicolaus Varnbuler was rector of the University of Tübingen. In 1567 and 1582 court judge assessor , since 1564 ducal Württemberg councilor, Nikolaus Varnbuler was raised to the imperial nobility in 1573 .

Varnbuler had been in the service of the Dukes of Württemberg since 1548 . Nikolaus Varnbüler was instrumental in the negotiations on the Augsburg Religious Peace of 1555. During this time he was also an advisor to the Margraves of Brandenburg . From 1553 to 1567, Nikolaus Varnbüler was instrumental in drafting the statutes for the Württemberg land law .

In 1547 Nikolaus Varnbuler married Regina Walter, daughter of an old Augsburg patrician family. The marriage resulted in a total of 11 children. The second son Nikolaus (* 1549 in Tübingen; † 1609 in Tübingen) also became a lawyer and professor at the University of Tübingen. The third son, Hans Ulrich (* 1551 in Tübingen; † 1630 in Stuttgart) became a state official in Württemberg (senior council and marriage court secretary). He was the father of the diplomat Johann Konrad Varnbuler (1595–1657).
