Nicolaus Weigel

Nicolaus Weigel (often also Nikolaus Weigel ; * around 1396 in Hennersdorf , Duchy of Liegnitz ; † September 11, 1444 in Leipzig ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and clergyman .

Life

Nicolaus Weigel studied at the University of Leipzig from 1414 . He obtained a bachelor's degree in 1416 and a master's degree in 1418 . He became a professor at the university. In the academic year 1423/1424 he was dean of the artist faculty, from 1426 vice chancellor and from April 23, 1427 to summer 1427 rector of the university. The bishop of Meissen Johannes Hoffmann von Schweidnitz also completed his priestly ordination in 1427 . In 1431 he received a bachelor's degree in theology and later became professor of theology.

Nicolaus Weigel was sent to the Council of Basel as a representative of the University of Leipzig, the Duke of Saxony and the Bishop of Meissen from 1433 to 1436 and again in 1442 . There he was named indulgence commissioner for the church province of Magdeburg and for the diocese of Meissen in 1436 . During this time he wrote a smaller treatise on indulgences and, in 1441, the Tractatus de indulgentiis , which is now considered one of the most extensive medieval indulgences .

Nicolaus Weigel worked as a preacher in Leipzig and was also canon at Breslau Cathedral . He was also canon at Liegnitz Cathedral . On May 30, 1441 he was awarded the degree of Dr. theol. awarded.
