Nikolaus Urban von Urbanstadt (born August 15, 1801 in Eger , † December 16, 1873 in Görkau ) was a Bohemian-Austrian municipal official , local history researcher and archivist .

Life

Nikolaus's parents were Franz Urban (ennobled with “Urban von Urbanstadt”), whose ancestors came from Duderstadt , and Sabrina Ernstberger from Eger, who had married on January 8, 1799. The father, at that time a non-commissioned officer of the 42nd Austrian Infantry Regiment, was elevated to the nobility by Emperor Franz I in 1818 with the title of Urbanstadt because of the services he had earned during the Napoleonic Wars . Due to the frequent relocation of his father for professional reasons, Urbanstadt attended schools in Eger, Leitmeritz and Prague before he graduated from the Faculty of Law and Politics at the Karl Ferdinand University in Prague from 1822 to 1826 in order to prepare for a civil servant career. After several years of work as an intern, he was appointed provisional consumption tax commissioner for the city of Kaaden on August 8, 1829 . In 1834 he married Katharina Janka. In the same year he is listed as the official consumption tax commissioner for Kaaden.

In the very old city of Kaaden, where he had access to archives and old documents, Urbanstadt's interest in historical research was aroused, to which he devoted himself to his official duties with great zeal. He spent ten professional years here and was transferred to Krumlov in 1839 . In 1852 he became the financial district commissioner in Eger. He also worked there as the city archivist. On December 13, 1866, he retired as a civil servant. However, he continued his intensive work as a local historian. At the end of April 1873 he moved to Görkau, where he died in December of the same year.

Urbanstadt wrote numerous chronicles and essays about localities in the Egerland . Anton August Naaff has compiled a list of his writings in his 'biographical sketch'. A portrait of Urbanstadt can be found in volume 5 of his history of the district authority areas Komotau, Saaz and Kaaden .
