Niloofar Beyzaie (born January 15, 1967 in Tehran ) (also: Niloufar Beyzaie , Niloofar Beyzai , Persian نیلوفر بیضایی or نیلوفر بیضائی) is an Iranian playwright and director .

Life

Niloofar Beyzaie is the daughter of theater and film director Bahram Beyzaie (Bahram Beyzai) and Monir Azam Raminfar, who comes from a theater family. Her uncle Iraj Raminfar is a well-known costume and stage designer in Iran. Her mother's uncle is Abbas Javanmard, who made a name for himself as a theater director in Iran in the 1940s and 1950s. Niloofar Beyzaie has lived in exile in Frankfurt am Main since 1985 . After studying German , theater, film and media studies (TFM) and education ( Magister Artium ) at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt , she founded the independent theater group Daritsche in 1994 . The group staged several plays under their direction in Frankfurt and in many cities in Europe, Canada and the USA. She is married and has a daughter.

Act

The central themes of her theater work are “women”, “being foreign” and “the suffering of the individual in the crowd”. In her theater she deals with contemporary topics and takes a socially critical view of Iran and the resulting human fate. Her plays are literally based on post-dramatic theater forms. Some of her plays are documentary. Her plays have been performed in Germany, Europe, the USA and Canada since 1995 and are in great demand within the Iranian exile community. Since 2010, her pieces have been performed in Persian with German surtitles. In addition to her theater work, she writes articles about theater and the political and social situation in Iran, especially that of women.

She campaigns for women's rights and human rights in Iran and is involved in the Iranian art scene in exile for the rights of Iranian homosexuals and the religious minorities, especially the Bahais .

In 2005 she was honored by the Persian World Academy for Art, Literature and Media in Budapest for her committed theater work in exile as the best female director in the performing arts category. In the same year her play “Daughters of the Sun” (Come, Dance with Me) was performed in Switzerland by the Maralam Theater, directed by Peter Braschler.

The new production of her play "No Man's Land" was performed in March 2009 in German in Karlsruhe.

In October 2009 Beyzaie's play One Acts, Two Murders was premiered in Frankfurt am Main (then in several German cities as well as in Copenhagen, Vienna and Vancouver). It is a documentary play about the political murder of the Forouhar couple. From this piece on, all of her plays were performed with German surtitles and thus made available to a non-Persian-speaking audience.

Your play Face to Face. On the threshold of the cold season (2011–2012) is about two important women in Iranian history: Tahirih Qurrat al-ʿAin and Forough Farokhzad. This piece was performed in October 2011 in Frankfurt and Cologne and then in Toronto, Ottawa, Los Angeles.

After a short break from the theater, in 2015 she staged a play by her father In the Presence of the Wind . The play premiered on October 3, 2015 in Frankfurt and had two further performances in Frankfurt am Main on October 4, 2015 and December 4, 2015. Further performances took place until October 2016 in London, Cologne, Heidelberg, St Andrews and in Würzburg (3 performances in cooperation with the Würzburg theater ensemble).

In 2017 she staged the play "In this place and in this time", which is based on the stories of the writer Mahshid Amirshahy. The play premiered on October 28, 2017 at the international theater in Frankfurt am Main. In addition to Frankfurt (3 performances), the piece was performed in Cologne (2 performances), Berlin and Heidelberg in Persian and with German surtitles and will be on stage with further guest performances in Nuremberg and Zurich until June 2018.

The play "In this place and in this time" received the audience award of the Iranian theater festival in Heidelberg in February 2018 as the best play.

Niloofar Beyzaie was honored on March 2nd and 3rd, 2018 in Vancouver by the "Cultural Society of Iranian Women" on International Women's Day for her oeuvre and her tireless theater work. In this context, excerpts from several of her plays are performed by a theater group based in Vancouver. The play is called "Lady in Mirror" (the title comes from Mrs. Beyzaie's first play with the title "Banu in der Spiegelstadt") and was staged by the young theater director Hessam Anvari Ardakani.

In 2018 she staged the play "Die Verschollenen" (The Lost People) which carried out the political mass murders of dissidents by the Islamic regime in Iran in the 1980s.

In 2019 she staged the song "When love is a sin", in which poets from different epochs and from Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan tell of their lives and stories of suffering as women and in the language of their poetry and poems.
