Nils Burwitz

Nils Burwitz (* 1940 in Swinoujscie ) is a German painter.

Life

In 1945 Burwitz and his family had to flee to West Germany . In 1958 he emigrated to South Africa with his family . There he finished his school education and received his doctorate in 1963 from the Witwatersrand University as a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. With the help of a scholarship , he studied in England , Switzerland and Salzburg . In Salzburg he attended a course in lithography at Oskar Kokoschka's School of Seeing. He returned to South Africa and taught at Witwatersrand University, at Dorkey House in Johannesburg and in Soweto . In South Africa he campaigned against the apartheid regime.

In 1976 he moved with his wife Maria and three children to Valldemossa on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca. In addition to watercolors, he created frescoes and oil paintings. Burwitz also created leaded glass windows , which are mainly found in churches on Mallorca.

His works have been purchased by various renowned institutions, including the Albertina Vienna, the Albertinum Dresden, the libraries of the cities of Boston, Buffalo and New York, the Congress Library in Washington, the Kunsthalle Hamburg , the Museum Ludwig Cologne, the Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, the National Museum Warsaw, the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, the British Museum and the Albert Museum in London.
