Nils Strindberg

Nils Strindberg (born September 4, 1872 in Stockholm , † October 1897 on Kvitøya , Svalbard ) was a Swedish scientist and photographer . In 1897 he participated in the failed balloon flight to the North Pole by Salomon August Andrée .

Life

Strindberg studied at Uppsala University until 1893 and in 1895 received the post of clerk at Stockholm University, now Stockholm University . In the same year he was chosen by Andrée as the third man for the polar expedition. In 1896 Strindberg traveled to Paris and was instructed in the handling of gas balloons . Then he went to Svalbard. Due to unfavorable wind conditions, the pole trip did not take place this year. In 1896 he became engaged to Anna Charlier . Eight months later, in July 1897, Strindberg started with Andrée and Knut Frænkel from the Danish island with the balloon Örnen (eagle) , in which he and the other two members of the expedition died. The bodies were not found until 33 years later on the island of Kvitøya , brought back to Sweden and cremated . The ashes were buried in a shared grave on Norra begravningsplatsen in Stockholm .

Strindberg's father was a nephew of the writer August Strindberg .
