Nina Turner (* 7. December 1967 in Cleveland , Ohio as Nina Hudson ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . She was a member of the Ohio Senate from 2008 to 2014 and has served on the Board of Directors of Our Revolution since 2016 .

Life

Nina Turner's parents were teenagers themselves when she was born and divorced when Turner was five years old. She has six younger siblings and grew up in “poor” circumstances. Her childhood was marked by several changes of residence. She started working at the age of 14. She left John F. Kennedy High School in 1986 at the age of 19 and was initially employed. In the following years, she earned an associate degree , a bachelor's degree from Community College in Cuyahoga County and a Master of Arts in history from Cleveland State University in 1997 .

Turner began her political career as an intern with Senator Rhine McLin , and later worked for Michael R. White , then mayor of Cleveland. Under him she became the "Executive Assistant of Legislative Affairs". She ran in 2001 for the Cleveland City Council (about: Councilor Cleveland), received after a first defeat but in 2004 a mandate.

When Senator Lance Mason, elected in 2007, stepped down in 2008 in favor of a judge, Turner was chosen as a replacement by the remaining Democrats. On September 15, 2008, she became a member of the Ohio Senate.

She then received a regular mandate in the 2010 Senate election. In 2014, she lost her candidacy as Secretary of State of Ohio to Jon A. Husted , after previously being supported by Bill Clinton .

During the primaries and presidential campaign in the United States in 2016 , Turner supported Hillary Clinton , then Bernie Sanders .

In 2016 she was appointed to the Board of Directors of the NGO Our Revolution .

In 2018 she played herself in a guest role on the television series Black Lightning .
