Ninive , also Neuoberruppersdorf , is a district of the city of Herrnhut in the Saxon Upper Lusatia . After it was incorporated into Ruppersdorf in 1930, this place was incorporated into Herrnhut together with Schwan and Ruppersdorf in 1994.

Position and extent

The settlement is about one kilometer south of Ruppersdorf and two kilometers north of Oderwitz on a disused section of the Zittau – Löbau railway line . The site was divided into two parts by the railway line, the newer properties, built after 1900, are located to the west of the railway line, while the older properties are located on the east side. Originally there was only a windmill on the west side, which has not been preserved.

At this point, several old paths and trails crossed, such as the cross and the middle street , along which Nineveh extends over an area of about 600 by 600 meters.

Origin of name

In earlier times the place was mostly only known under the name Neuoberruppersdorf . But the name Nineveh has established itself . Where this name comes from cannot be said with certainty. It is assumed that this originates from the Ninive inn built here , around which several cottagers later settled. The inn in turn probably derives its name from the Mesopotamian city of Nineveh .

economy

The area around Nineveh is mainly used for agricultural purposes. In the southeast of the village there is a sand pit in which the glacial gravel and sands of the Löbauer moraine from the Elster glaciation are mined. There is also an artificial ski slope in Nineveh, which can be used at times during the year.
