Strahwalde is a district of the city of Herrnhut in the district of Görlitz in southeast Saxony .

geography

Strahwalde in the foreland of the Oberlausitzer Bergland is located in the central part of the district, about eight kilometers southeast of Löbau and eighteen kilometers northwest of Zittau .

history

The place Strahwalde was first mentioned in 1317 as Strabenwal (d) t (which means "place in the undergrowth, wood"), when the Margrave Woldemar of Brandenburg referred eight villages to the court of the city of Löbau. In 1390 a knight's seat was recorded, which was designated as a manor in 1573 and was owned by the von Klüx family until 1645. The estate was divided into Niederstrahwalde and Oberstrahwalde. The manor Niederstrahwalde came to Caspar von Bock. From 1657 to 1721 Niederstrahwalde was owned by the von Rabenau family .

Nieder-Strahwalde Castle

Then it came to the Kyaw family , under whom both goods were combined. In 1724 the manor burned down as a result of arson. In the same year the owner, August Leopold von Kyaw, had the construction of the baroque palace begin.

With the sale in 1750 the estate was separated again. Niederstrahwalde took over from Burgsdorff . He was followed in 1758 by Johann Ernst von Gersdorff , in 1769 by the ruling Count House of Reuss and in 1797 by Friedrich Rudolf Freiherr von Wattewill , whose family provided bishops of the neighboring Moravian Brethren . After further changes of ownership, Georg Wehle sold it to Hugo Schlegel in 1907, who commissioned the renovation of the castle. After further changes of ownership, the property was expropriated in 1945. After years of use as a children's home and kindergarten, the castle has been privately owned since 2002, but will be offered for sale again in 2019 (for € 375,000).
