Nirmal Verma ( Hindi : निर्मल वर्मा, Nirmal Varmā , Nirmal Varma ; born April 3, 1929 in Shimla , Himachal Pradesh ; † October 25, 2005 in New Delhi ) is one of the most important representatives in India and is a co-founder of the Nayi-Kahani - Movement in Hindi Literature. He worked as a writer and translator. His literary work includes short stories , novels , plays , travelogues , reports , literary criticism and essays .

Life

Nirmal Verma studied at St Stephen's College of Delhi University history. In the early 1950s he wrote articles for a student magazine. After graduating with an MA in history, he taught in Delhi and was the author of several literary magazines.

From the beginning, Verma's works were shaped by his political commitment. From 1947 to 1948 he regularly attended Mahatma Gandhi's public morning prayers. In 1956 he joined the Communist Party of India .

In 1959, Nirmal Verma went to Prague , led a translation project at Charles University and translated modern Czech writers into Hindi . During this ten-year stay, Nirmal Verma also traveled to other European countries, including Germany and the USA . For a time he lived in London . Many of his travelogues and his first novel Ve Din (These Days; 1964), which is based on his student days in Prague, were written during this time . After the crackdown on the Prague Spring , he returned to India in 1968 and turned away from communism in disaffection, but remained politically active. He protested against the declaration of a state of emergency (1975-1977) and the Chinese takeover of Tibet .

As a representative of the Nayi Kahani , he contributed significantly to the realignment of modern Hindi short history. In 1973, the film adaptation of his story Maya Darpan (Dream Worlds) by Kumar Shahani won the Critics' Prize at the Filmfare Awards for Best Picture .

Verma received the Jnanpith Award in 1999.
