from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No Limit Records was an American independent label that was founded by Master P in Richmond in 1990 and later moved to New Orleans . The label's products were distributed by Priority Records . It was best known in the mid to late 1990s, when numerous albums and singles of the label were on the Billboard charts and received gold and platinum awards from the RIAA . Through these successes it played an important role in the spread of the Down South .

Beginning

No Limit Records was in the late 1980s by the then students of Business Administration of Merritt Junior College Oakland , Master P , as a record shop in Richmond founded. He inherited the start-up capital, US $ 10,000, from his grandfather. From working in the store he learned that many customers were very interested in gangsta rap - however, at the time, many labels were turning away from the genre because they did not want to face the controversy that this type of rap music was causing Reason that triggered the explicit texts. Knowing this, he expanded the concept of the store in 1990 and turned it into a record label. The first release was his own solo album Get Away Clean the following year .

success

The label had its first sales successes in 1994. Both Master P's third album The Ghettos Tryin To Kill Me! , and in particular the compilation West Coast Bad Boyz, Vol. 1 were underground successes. The latter album featured Rappin '4-Tay and E-40 , among others , shortly before they became known across the US. As a result, the label moved to New Orleans , Master P's birthplace, and built their own production team, Beats by the Pound , to work on each release. The official cover designers were Pen & Pixel from Houston, whose cover was characterized by the excessive use of Photoshop with bright colors and wild motifs. This created an own style that was the same on all albums. Also, many rappers have now been signed, whose albums were produced and released very quickly, sometimes within a period of only 2 weeks. As a result, up to 10 albums of the label appeared within a year. The first album to appear on the Billboard 200 was the 1995 compilation Down South Hustlers . The final breakthrough followed with Master P's album Ice Cream Man , which was awarded a gold record by the RIAA in 1996 and even a platinum record in 2002 . As a result, the other artists on the label also sold similarly, although their music was rarely played on the radio or on television. In addition, the rap star Snoop Dogg has now been won over for the label and thus attracted even more attention.

The End

At the beginning of the 2000s, the success quickly waned, as some of the better-known rappers of the label left the label and, like Mystikal , still had success. Soon the label consisted almost entirely of Master P and his family members and many other newly recorded artists who were not so well received by customers. Master P then closed the label. He later re-established it as an imprint of Koch Records under the name The New No Limit Records .

Restart

At the beginning of 2014, the music label No Limit Records was continued under the name No Limit Forever . Master P released several new music videos in January 2014 under the new No Limit Forever music label.
