ancestry
Is a seedling of the Taylor variety (natural cross (?) Of Vitis labrusca × Vitis riparia ). It was selected by Otto Wasserziecher in 1896.
According to another theory, Noah is said to be a natural cross of Isabella x Vitis labrusca , which was found in 1846 in the garden of Paphro Steele & Son in West Hartford, Connecticut. The variety was named after Noah, who, according to the Bible, became a winegrower after the flood and landing with the ark. This grape variety belongs to the group of older American direct producer varieties.
Ampelographic features
- The young leaves are downy, hairy, pale green, with thick white felted hairs underneath and slightly carmine-red edged.
- The shoot tips are delicate, the uppermost leaflets are folded like a boat, tomentose, slightly carmine-red edged.
- Fully grown leaves are large, thick, just as long as wide, similar to the Riparia variety, three-lobed, slightly cupped, upper side dark green, shiny, blistered, smooth, whitish-reddish fluffy-tomentose hairy underneath, leaf teeth long, narrow, pointed, pedicel book V- shaped open
- Grapes medium to large, cylindrical-conical, compact.
- The berries are medium to large, round bluish-green, green to yellowish when ripe, strongly scented and have a thick berry skin. The berry juice is sweet and has a fox taste.
properties
The shoots grow vigorously and shoots are quite late. Prefers sandy, stony and deep soils with a low lime content. The roots of the variety are resistant to root phylloxera infestation . There is good resistance to the fungal diseases such as Peronospora, Oidium and Botrytis. Chalky soil causes chlorosis in the vines. Because of the late budding, there is a low risk of late frost. The winter frost resistance is very good due to the good ripeness of the wood.
Wine
The wine is dry, rich in alcohol, somewhat bitter and has a more or less strong fox taste.
