Nocturnal Breed is a Norwegian thrash and black metal band from Oslo that was formed in 1996.

history

The band was founded in 1996 by singer and bassist SA Destroyer ( Gehenna , Satyricon ) and guitarist Ed "Silenoz" Damnator ( Dimmu Borgir ). In the following months some demo recordings appeared, some of which songs appeared on various compilations. The band reached a contract with the Dutch label Hammerheart Records and released the debut album Aggressor in October 1997. The album was recorded in the Gordon Studios in Oslo, with two session members with guitarist Astennu and drummer Rick Hellraizer . The release was followed by a tour through Europe that fall, together with Emperor and Bal-Sagoth . From this tour on guitarist Axeman I. Maztor and drummer Andy Michaels joined the band.

After the tour, the band worked on material for a new album. Meanwhile, published Hammerheart Records EP Triumph of the Blasphemer in 1998, on the live recordings from the tour (including the Death -Cover Evil Dead ), unpublished material of the recording of the aggressor , and the WASP -Cover I'm Alive contained . Shortly thereafter, drummer Andy Michaels was replaced by Tex Terror. In spring 1998 the band recorded the second album No Retreat No Surrender at Gordon Studios and released the album that same year on Hammerheart Records. After the recordings, Ed Damnator left the band and was replaced by Ben Hellion. He had been a friend of SA Destroyer for a long time before. In order to promote the album, another tour followed through Europe, during which the band was supposed to part with Hammerheart Records, as the band complained about the lack of support for the tour from the label. After the tour, the band went to Gordon Studios for three months to record their third album, The Tools of the Trade , which was released on the US label Holycaust Records in late 2000 . The album was not marketed outside of the USA and the contract with the label was soon to be dissolved.

The Belgian label Painkiller Records became aware of the band and released The Tools of the Trade again. The label also released the box set The Remasters in 2005 , which contained all previously released songs in a remastered version, a new cover design and new supplements, as well as over ten previously unreleased songs. I. Maztor, who left the band in 2001, was replaced by guitarist Tom Thrawn from Dødheimsgard . Due to conflicts with the band members, he left the band in 2005 and was replaced by AE Rattlehead. A few weeks later the band started writing new material for the next album.

The recordings for Fields of red found in the Dead Ringer Studios instead. The album was released in 2007 through Agonia Records .

style

The band plays a mixture of Thrash and Black Metal, although small traces of rock 'n' roll can be heard here and there. Thrash Metal is based on that from the 1980s of bands like Sodom , Destruction , Vulcano and Sarcófago . Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia described Nocturnal Breed as "what happens when a bunch of (supposedly) humorless black metal musicians tired of posing grim and nihilistic all the time and decide to have some fun for a change."
