The Nolichucky River is a river in the US states of North Carolina and Tennessee . It drains the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

The Nolichucky River arises at the confluence of the North Toe Rivers and Cane Rivers near the Huntdale community . The river is 185 km long.

The Nolichucky Dam , completed in 1912 and dams Davy Crockett Lake, is located on the river. It has been operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) since 1939 . Due to the high proportion of sediments, the hydropower plant had to be stopped. However, the dam is still used for flood control purposes and for recreational activities on the downstream river.

Between Poplar and Unaka Springs is the Nolichucky River Gorge, one of the most scenic in the southern United States. It offers a technically demanding whitewater route.

The natural flowing Nolichucky River is a popular whitewater waters for rafting and canoeing . During dry periods in the summer months, tour operators switch to the nearby Watauga River . The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) regulates the water flow of the Watauga River through the Watauga Dam and Wilbur Dam and ensures sufficient water for white water rafting tours during the summer months.
