The Nomadic today
The Nomadic was commissioned by the White Star Line in 1910 together with the slightly smaller Traffic . Its purpose was to bring passengers, mail and supplies from the French port of Cherbourg to the Olympic- class ships ( Olympic , Titanic , Britannic ) that could not call at the port due to their size. She was built in the Belfast shipyard Harland & Wolff on slipway No. 1. The Olympic and Titanic were built at the same time on slipways No. 2 and 3 . The interior design of the Nomadic was based closely on the ships of the Olympic class. As a tender boat, the Nomadic was mostly designed for first and second class passengers, only a small area of the ship was intended for third class passengers. Passengers third class were mostly with the traffic carried. The Nomadic sailed under the French flag and with a French crew.
Today the Nomadic is located in the historic Hamilton Dock, built in 1867, on the former Harland & Wolff shipyard and can be visited. She is the only remaining steamer in the White Star Line.
