The Noordland was a passenger ship put into service in 1884 by the Belgian-American shipping company Red Star Line , which was mainly used in passenger traffic on the Antwerp - New York route. The ship was decommissioned and scrapped in 1908.

history

The 5212 GRT steamship Noordland was built for the Red Star Line at the Laird Brothers shipyard in Birkenhead and was launched on November 1, 1883. The ship was 121.9 meters long and 14.3 meters wide and had a chimney, four steel masts and a four-bladed single propeller. The top speed was 13 knots (24 km / h). There was space on board for 619 passengers (63 first class, 56 second class, 500 third class). The main saloon was located amidships in the deckhouse and was crowned by a dome-like skylight . The promenade deck, which was almost 50 meters long, stretched over it. The cabins were located below the saloon on the main deck.

The steel-built ship could load 5,000 tons of cargo. There were four decks , three of which were covered with steel. The hull was equipped with watertight bulkheads . The steam engine was provided with a high pressure and a low pressure cylinder, which could produce an output of 2500 PSi . The coal was shoveled by hand into the total of 18 furnaces of the three double-ended steam boilers . The electric lamps used in the lounge and engine room were from Siemens Brothers & Co.

As usual with Red Star, Antwerp was the home port in Belgium and the ship sailed under the Belgian flag. On March 29, 1884, the Noordland left Antwerp on her maiden voyage to New York . She drove on this route for most of her entire service life. On 30 January 1886, the collided Noordland under the command of Captain HE nickel in the North River in heavy snowfall and resulting low visibility with Servia of Cunard Line . While the Servia was hardly damaged, the starboard side of the bow of the Noordland was dented deeply.

On March 9, 1901, the steamer set sail for the last time from Antwerp to New York. Then the Noordland was chartered to the American Line , which converted it into a two-class ship, so that from now on 160 passengers in the second and 500 in the third class could be accommodated. From April 24, 1901, the Noordland commuted permanently between Liverpool and Philadelphia . From March 28, 1906, she was temporarily used for two round trips on her old route Antwerp – New York, but then drove again from Liverpool to Philadelphia. The Noordland completed her last voyage in 1908 and was scrapped that same year.
