Nora Berra (born January 21, 1963 in Lyon ) is a French politician ( UMP / Les Républicains ). She was a member of the European Parliament from 2012 to 2014 .

Life

Berra is a doctor of medicine. She worked as a general practitioner in the Hospices Civils de Lyon network and in several international pharmaceutical laboratories, where she was responsible for medical questions. Later she was a lecturer in nephrology at several nursing schools in Lyon.

In the center-right Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP), Berra was a political advisor and board member. She was a member of the council of Neuville-sur-Saône . From 2008 she was a representative of the 8th arrondissement in the municipal council of Lyon. She was also a member of the Rhône-Alpes Regional Council from 2010 to 2015 . On June 23, 2009 she was appointed State Secretary for Seniors in the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (under Ministers Xavier Darcos and Éric Woerth ) in the Fillon II cabinet. In the Fillon III cabinet, sworn in on November 13, 2010 , she was appointed State Secretary for Health (under Minister Xavier Bertrand ). She held this position until the change of government in May 2012.

In the European elections in 2009 she ran initially unsuccessfully, but on June 16, 2012 she moved to the European Parliament for Damien Abad , who had left the country. As a member of the Group of the European People's Party (EPP), Berra was a member of the Committee on International Trade and was the delegate for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council . She did not run for re-election in the 2014 European elections.

Berra has been a member of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Council since January 2016 . In the presidential election of the Républicains (successor party to the UMP) and their allies in the center-right spectrum for the 2017 presidential election , she supported Nicolas Sarkozy , who was defeated in the first round. In the parliamentary elections in June 2017 , Berra ran in the 3rd constituency of the Rhône department, but was eliminated with 13.1% in the first ballot. In December 2017, she announced her resignation from the Les Républicains party. She criticized the party's shift to the right under the new chairman Laurent Wauquiez , whom she accused of a "project of closure". For the 2019 European elections , she entered the list of the liberal Union des démocrates et indépendants (UDI), which, however, did not receive a seat.
