Under the then responsible DFB coach Erich Ribbeck , the ESV player made his debut on October 31, 1979 at the international match in Osnabrück against Soviet Union B in the DFB selection of amateurs. It was the 153rd international match of the DFB amateurs, whose history ended with the game on November 14, 1979 in Baunatal against Norway. Hartmann played alongside players like Hans-Jörg Stiller , Roland Dickgießer , Uwe Eplinius , Dieter Bernhardt , Karl Richter , Jürgen Halbe , Dieter Kohnle , Klaus Gahr and Ralf Obermüller .

Hartmann made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga on the start day of the 1979/80 season , August 4, 1979, in a 0-1 away defeat against SSV Ulm in 1846. In February 1980, he saw the change of coach from Horst Pohl to Karl-Heinz Schmal and finished with teammates like Werner Michalka, Walter Ziegelmeier, Josef Stadler , Herfried Ruhs and Werner Killmaier in a 21er league after 39 league appearances with six goals in 17th place. Local rival MTV was relegated to the Bavarian League as 19th.

With the selection of the Bavarian Football Association , Hartmann won the final with 4-2 goals in Bocholt against the Lower Rhine in the competition of the regional cup on May 1, 1980 . Other players included Hans Pflügler and Dieter Bernhardt. In the second season in the 2. Bundesliga, 1980/81 , he made 25 appearances (3 goals) and the ESV ranked 16th. On the 38th matchday, May 30, 1981, Hartmann and colleagues ended the season with a 0-1 defeat at Ulm 46. In attack, Franz Gerber had scored 23 goals in 33 league games. Since after the round the single-track 2nd Bundesliga was introduced and the south and southwest were given 10 places in it from 1981/82, Hartmann played in the 2nd Bundesliga again after two years. Due to numerous departures, the ESV also rose from the league in 1981/82. For Hartmann this ended the higher-class appearances.

In addition to the league operations, the amateur championship and the amateur national team, appearances in the DFB Cup from 1979 to 1981 against Offenbacher Kickers, Union Solingen and 1. FC Nürnberg were further sporting highlights in Norbert Hartmann's career.
