Norbert Scherbaum (born July 29, 1961 in Essen ) is a German psychiatrist and university professor. He is professor for clinical addiction research at the University of Duisburg-Essen and medical director of the LVR-Klinikum Essen .

Life

After graduating from high school in Essen, Scherbaum studied medicine at the University of Essen and at the University of London from 1981 onwards, with a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He completed his studies in 1987 in Essen. Scherbaum then did his military service as a medical officer in the Federal Air Force and conducted parallel research at the Psychological Institute of the University of Hamburg . He completed his training as a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy and as a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry at the LVR clinics in Düsseldorf and Essen. Scherbaum completed his doctorate in 1991 at the University of Hamburg. From 1991 to 1994 he worked at the department for child and adolescent psychiatry at the LVR-Klinikum Essen under the direction of Christian Eggers .

In 1995 Scherbaum became senior physician in the general psychiatry department of the LVR clinic in Essen under head physician Markus Gastpar . In 1998 he spent several months researching at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the US state of New York. He specialized in particular in the field of addiction medicine and completed his habilitation in 2002 with work on the substitution therapy of opioid addicts .

In 2004 Scherbaum became director of the newly created clinic for dependent behavior and addiction medicine at the LVR-Klinikum Essen and professor for clinical addiction research at the University of Duisburg-Essen . Since 2013 he has also been director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In 2014 he became the medical director of the clinic.

Scherbaum research in particular to look for medical aspects of opiate addiction , so to improve substitution treatment, the evaluation of Opiatentzugsbehandlung , detection and treatment of co-morbid mental disorders , evaluation of drug consumption rooms or "Turbo Withdrawal" . Other areas of research include the use of new psychoactive substances and the misuse of approved drugs such as anesthetics , opiate analgesics and anti-epileptics .

Norbert Scherbaum has been a member of the Federal Ministry of Health's expert committee for the evaluation of addictive substances since 2010 . Since 2011 he has been a member of the Addiction and Drugs Committee of the German Medical Association . The committee advises the board of directors of the German Medical Association on medical-scientific questions in connection with the subject of drugs.
