Northern Lithuania ( lit.Siaurės Lietuva ) is a region in northern Lithuania . Here (north) Schemaitic , (west and east) Aukschtaitic is spoken.

geography

The northern Lithuanian karst area is characterized by its pronounced geological and geomorphological structure, the interaction between ancient and present geological phenomena. Northern Lithuania is known for its underground and surface terrain ( karst caves ). On the surface, karstification is also characteristic. It is planned to anchor the status of the northern Lithuanian karst region through a separate law and, from the point of view of agriculture, to provide for legal environmental protection measures in this region. history

The area was settled by Baltic tribes . In addition to Žemaitija , Aukštaitija , there were also Zemgallians and Sēlija . Northern Lithuania and Lower Lithuania were mentioned from the 9th to the 11th centuries by the Swedish runic entries, annals of Russia in the 12th century and chronicles in Livonia in the 13th century.
