The North Ossetian ASSR ( North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . It existed from 1924 and 1936 to 1991. The capital was Vladikavkaz , which was temporarily called Ordzhonikidze. Around 700,000 people now live in the 8,000 square kilometer mountainous region in the northern Caucasus . Lead and zinc are mined at Sadon . After the end of the USSR, the region retained its status and has since been part of Russia as the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania .

On July 7, 1924, the "North Ossetian Autonomous Region " was established in the Russian Federation with its seat in Vladikavkaz , which was renamed the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic with the 1936 Constitution on December 5, 1936.
