The Norland was a ferry of the British shipping company North Sea Ferries put into service in 1974, which was in service for the company until 1987 on the route from Kingston upon Hull to Rotterdam and then until 2002 from Kingston upon Hull to Zeebrugge . Since March 2002 the ferry has been used as SNAV Sicilia for the Italian shipping company Società Navigazione Alta Velocità between Naples and Palermo . After the retirement of the ship in October 2010, the demolition in followed in November of the same year Indian Alang .

history

The Norland was built under hull number 972 in the AG Weser shipyard in Bremerhaven and was launched on October 13, 1973. After delivery to North Sea Ferries on June 7, 1974, it was put into service three days later on the route from Kingston upon Hull to Rotterdam. In December of the same year, the sister ship Norstar followed .

In April 1982 the Norland was seized as a troop transport by the British government for use during the Falklands War . She belonged to a convoy led by the HMS Invincible (R05) and managed the passenger ship Canberra . The HMS Antelope (F170) , sunk in combat operations, was also part of this association. After returning to England and a two-month stay in the shipyard, the ferry resumed service between Kingston upon Hull and Rotterdam on April 20, 1983.

On June 7, 1985, the Norland suffered severe damage when she evaded an incapable of maneuvering freighter in front of Hoek van Holland and hit the ground, creating a 15-foot-long crack in the starboard side. The repair work on the ship lasted over three months.

From May 1987, the Norland was extended by around 20.5 meters in the Schichau Seebeck shipyard in Bremerhaven. On July 1, 1987, it was reopened with Zeebrugge as the new port of destination. In 1994, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea required a reduction in the ship's cargo and passenger capacity, which, despite the extension, sank compared to when it was commissioned in 1974. From 1996 the ferry belonged to the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company .

After a last crossing on February 28, 2002, the Norland was sold to the Italian Società Navigazione Alta Velocità in March and renamed SNAV Sicilia . On May 25, 2002 the ship was put into service between Naples and Palermo.

After eight years in service for this operator, the ferry was retired on October 1, 2010. In the same month the SNAV Sicilia went to Alang, India, to be demolished, where it arrived on October 30th. The scrapping began in November 2010.
