The film deals with the American painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell (1894 to 1978). Rockwell created 322 covers for the American weekly magazine The Saturday Evening Post over a period of more than forty years , which made him very popular. He is also known for his illustrations, calendars and covers for Boys' Life magazine, which he designed for the Boy Scouts of America youth association .
Rockwell's world is shown using reenactments, still images, paintings and old and new film recordings. The artist is showing covers in his studio in Stockbridge , Massachusetts , which he painted over the years for the Saturday Evening Post . He explains that he does not depict the world as it is, but as he would like it to be and that he is reluctant to capture ugly things.
