Janni's fireplace
Peter Janni was born in Italy in 1874 and came to America as a railroad worker. He eventually ended up in Northport and bought a limestone quarry south of Northport in 1923. Janni shipped the limestone from the quarry all over Washington. The quarry was in the center of the tetrahedrite mineralized zone in northern Stevens County. Ore deposits in the area occur in "druses" or "chimneys", usually in tunnels containing lead ore with a high silver content. In 1953, Janni's employees discovered a lead chimney with silver on the second level of the quarry measuring 1.8 m × 1.5 m (6 ft × 5 ft). They followed this down and sent almost 40 tons of high-quality lead ore to the CM&S Company , where they were further enriched. After digging 4.5 meters (15 ft) down, Janni said "covers the damn thing." Janni's men pleaded for following the chimney further, but Janni dismissed the objections with the words “maybe we will dig it up again one day”. Why he gave up the fireplace remains a mystery. According to some elderly Northport residents, the chimney is still there, buried under tons of limestone on the second level.
