Now Is the Hour is a jazz album by Charlie Haden and his Quartet West, recorded in France from July 18-20, 1995, and released on Verve the following year.
background
Charlie Haden and his Quartet West play a kind of “jazz noir” that is inspired by the films of the 1940s ( film noir ). The cover shows a photograph of the celebrations at the end of World War II . With that, Haden and the Quartet West followed the path already set on Always Say Goodbye . In seven of the twelve compositions, Haden relied on string arrangements by Alan Broadbent , which form the background for the quartet's interaction, especially for Ernie Watt's tenor saxophone playing. In addition to three original compositions, Haden recorded standards and bop classics.
reception
Tim Sheridan awarded four out of five stars on Allmusic and wrote about the album:
“Seldom does modern music so perfectly evoke a time and place in history as this terrific band. Fans of Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra will find the simple accessibility either surprising or disappointing, but fans of classic, romantic jazz will find joy. ”
“Seldom has modern music evoked a time and place in history as perfectly as this great band. Fans of Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra will find the ease of access either surprising or disappointing, but fans of classical, romantic jazz will find delight in it. "
Richard Cook and Brian Morton rated the album three (out of four) stars in the Penguin Guide to Jazz . Now Is the Hour is the "vintage product of a fixed band, maybe a little anonymous and lacks a clear direction." Haden's achievements are so little outstanding that it is more of an Ernie Watts group under a pseudonym . Highlights include the writers Palo Alto , Marables's Parable, and the title track.
