The Novorossiysk was a flight deck cruiser of the Soviet Navy . She was the third ship built as part of Project 1143 . It was in service between 1982 and 1991 before being scrapped in 1997.

history

The ship was added to the fleet list of the Soviet Union on June 24, 1975 and laid down on September 30, 1975 from shipyard 444 in Mykolaiv . During construction, some changes had to be made compared to the two predecessor ships. The number of aircraft carried has been increased by two and the flight deck has been strengthened so that it can also carry heavy transport helicopters. The ship was equipped with a tow sonar device and was to receive more modern 3K95 Kinschal instead of the Osa anti-aircraft missiles of its two sister ships . Since these were not yet available at the time the ship was equipped, the initially second anti-aircraft missile system was missing.

After its commissioning in 1982, the ship was initially assigned to the Black Sea Fleet , but moved to Severomorsk to the Northern Fleet the next year . After the Novorossiysk had participated in several exercises, it was transferred to the Pacific Fleet in Vladivostok in 1984 during a trip with several stays in Africa .

Due to cuts in the military budget , Novorossiysk was initially mothballed in 1991. In 1993 the ship was so badly damaged by a fire in the engine room that it was retired in 1994. It was demilitarized and sold to South Korea , where it was scrapped in 1997.
