Ntchisi is a town at 1,500 meters above sea level with 9357 inhabitants (2018 census) in the central region of Malawi, about 80 kilometers north of Lilongwe . It is located on the Lilongwe– Mzuzu road and is the capital of the district of the same name with an area of 1655 km² and around 204,000 inhabitants (2006 estimate).

Ntchisi is a very poor district and, along with the districts of Chitipa and Nsanje, is one of those with the largest number of mud houses (without fired bricks and tin roofs). In 1998 64.8% of the population lived below the poverty line of MK  9.27 per capita per day. The population distribution in the district is relatively uniform and, as in the entire highland area between the valleys of the Lilongwe and Dwangwa rivers, i.e. the cities of Dowa in the south, Mchinji in the west and Kasungu in the north, consists primarily of subsistence farmers . The soil is very densely cultivated, but heavily eroded. In the villages there is a lack of artesian wells , good seeds and artificial fertilizers. Mainly corn and beans are grown, but also tobacco, peanuts, soy, sweet potatoes, potatoes and vegetables. On the 1705 meter high Ntchisi mountain east of the city, intensive afforestation is taking place due to erosion. The original rainforest, which is designated as a bird sanctuary, still stands on its lower slopes towards the lake, including Miombo forest up to 700 meters above sea level .

The city of Ntchisi has a 1000 meter long airfield, a hospital and elementary and secondary schools, which are set up and organized by a Japanese development program (status 2006).
