Nvidia GeForce M

GeForce M is a brand name of the Nvidia company and refers to a product family of graphics processors for notebooks. The "M" stands for mobile. The Geforce-M family is replacing the Geforce Go product family with new products . With the GeForce M family, Nvidia mainly competes with the ATI Mobility Radeon from its competitor AMD .

Series overview

GeForce 8M, GeForce 9M, and GeForce 100M series

The graphics processors of the Geforce 8M series were presented in May 2007, are derived from the desktop graphics processors of the Geforce 8 series and offered DirectX 10 for the first time. All graphics processors of the GeForce 8M series have an integrated video processor and support Nvidia PureVideo HD of the second generation.

The graphics processors of the GeForce 9M series are based on the architecture of the predecessor series "GeForce 8M". The first variants are based on the older G8x graphics chips in 80 nm production, they are therefore only renamed models and have been sold to OEM manufacturers under a new name since February 2008 . The Geforce 8400M GS became the Geforce 9300M G; the Geforce 8600M GT was presented under the name 9500M GS, the 8700M GT as the 9650M GS. The other models are based on newer G9x chips with a smaller manufacturing structure (65 nm) and therefore consume less power than the purely renamed models.

All GeForce 9M series graphics processors have an integrated video processor. G84, G86, G96, G94 and G92 support second generation Nvidia PureVideo HD . The MCP79 is a chipset in which the graphics unit uses the technology of the G96, but, like the G98, an additional bitstream processor (BSP) for the VC-1 video format has been installed, which is why Nvidia supports PureVideo HD of the third generation becomes. The G9x GPUs theoretically support the hybrid SLI energy-saving function , which, however, is not used anywhere.

The graphics processors of the Geforce 100M series are based on the architecture of the previous series GeForce 9M, but the technical data has been partially changed. In particular, Nvidia mainly used smaller chips, but clocked higher than the previous models. The models are based on the G9x chips with a 65nm manufacturing structure.

All graphics processors of the GeForce 100M series have an integrated video processor. G96 supports second generation PureVideo HD . G98 supports third generation PureVideo HD .

GeForce 200M and GeForce 300M series

On March 3, 2009, Nvidia presented the new graphics processors of the GeForce 200M series at CeBIT . These are the Geforce GTX 280M and 260M. Since these were still based on the G92 chip, which was already used in the Geforce 8M series, Nvidia came under fire for the naming.

On June 15, 2009, Nvidia expanded the Geforce 200M series to include the performance, mainstream and low-end sectors. The GPUs of the GT21x series were introduced, which were manufactured for the first time in the 40 nm manufacturing process and support DirectX 10.1.

The GeForce 300M series is based on the same chips as the GeForce 200M series. For marketing reasons, the same chips have been reissued under a new series.

GeForce 400M, GeForce 500M, and GeForce 600M series

With the Geforce 400M series, Nvidia introduced DirectX11-capable graphics chips for the mobile market for the first time. These were based on the Fermi architecture already known from the desktop area . After revising the chips, the Geforce 500M series was introduced. The revision of the chips was limited to further optimization to 40 nm production. As a result of the revision, the chips could be clocked higher, or the power loss decreased with the same clock rate.

The Geforce 600M series was initially a pure renaming of the Geforce 500M models so that the OEM manufacturers could introduce notebooks with supposedly new models. Later models were based on the Kepler architecture and were already manufactured in the 28 nm manufacturing process.
