Nykteus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nykteus ( Gr. Νυκτεύς) is a king of Thebes in Greek mythology .

genealogy

The library of Apollodorus gives two different statements about the ancestry of Nykteus, once he names Chthonios , a branch as father, another time he describes him as the son of Hyrieus and Klonia. Others name Poseidon and Kelaino as parents. His brother was Lykos . Nykteus was married to Polyxo and had two daughters, Nykteis and Antiope . Asios of Samos called the nymph Callisto the daughter of Nykteus.

Government of Thebes

Nykteis married Polydorus , king of Thebes. When Polydoros died, his son Labdakos was still a minor and Nykteus took over the affairs of state as guardian. His beautiful daughter Antiope was pregnant by Zeus and out of fear of her father she fled to Sikyon and married King Epopeus there . Because of this shame, Nykteus committed suicide after he had given his brother and successor Lykos the order to bring Antiope back. Lykos conquered Sicyon, killed Epopeus and brought Antiope home.

According to another source, Antiope was kidnapped by Epopeus and therefore Nykteus waged war against Sicyon. Both Nykteus and Epopeus were so badly wounded in battle that they died soon after. Nykteus asked his brother to conquer Sicyon and free Antiope. This did not happen, however, because Lamedon , the successor of Epopeus, surrendered Antiope voluntarily.
