Nynäsbanan ( German  Nynäsbahn ) is the name of a Swedish railway line that runs from Älvsjö to Nynäshamn . The route belongs to Trafikverket , the passenger traffic on this route is ordered by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL).

history

The Nynäs Railway was opened to traffic on December 28, 1901. The traffic was initially operated by the Stockholm-Nynäshamn Järnväg company. Since October 1, 1909, trains continued on the Västra stambana route to Stockholm Central Station (Stockholm C). After the line was taken over by Statens Järnvägar (SJ), it has been operated electrically since November 1, 1962. In 1980 the line was equipped with the ATC safety system and since 1995 the line from Älvsjö to Västerhaninge has been double-tracked. The line is single-track between Västerhaninge and Nynäshamn.

In 1901 the journey time to Älvsjö- Handen was 56 minutes. It took 2 hours and 21 minutes to get to Nynashamn. Today the travel time Stockholm C – Handen is 25 minutes and Stockholm C – Nynäshamn 60 minutes.

On January 1, 1967, SL took over responsibility for local rail passenger transport within Stockholm County . SJ was still technically responsible for the cars and the staff on the route before Citypendeln won the tender in 2000 and took over operation. Stockholmståg KB has been responsible for city commuting since 2006 .

Trains

X60 in Nynäshamn station

The Nynäs Railway is mainly used by Stockholms Pendeltåg . In addition, individual freight trains run to Jordbro . The trains run every quarter of an hour between Stockholm and Västerhaninge during the day and every half hour in the outskirts of the day. Between Västerhaninge and Nynäshamn there is a half hourly service during the day and every hour in the evening and on weekends.

The route was split between 2006 and 2012 - travelers had to change trains in Västerhaninge if they wanted to travel between Nynäshamn and Stockholm. Only two express trains a day ran the entire route continuously. The transfer was introduced because there were too many technical problems when the X60 trains had previously been relocated . After solving these problems, the switch was initially retained to increase the stability of the timetable, before the break was given up with the commissioning of the second track between Västerhaninge and Tungelsta.

Expansion plans

The plans for the double-track expansion of the Västerhaninge – Tungelsta section were very tedious. They ended in the summer of 2009. Construction work began in July 2010 and should take around two years. In the meantime, it was assumed that the construction work would end within 2013. However, the double-track section was put into operation on December 3, 2012.

From August to November 2011, the Nynäsgård stop was converted into a crossing station . In addition, the restart of the Vega stop is planned (2019). [obsolete] The investigations were dependent on the expansion of a building area in the Haninge community. Construction began in 2015.
