Nysius helveticus is a bug from the family of ground bugs (Lygaeidae).

features

The bugs are 4.3 to 6.0 millimeters long. Unlike most of the hard-to-identify species of the genus Nysius , they are easy to identify thanks to their long, pale keel on the scutellum . Their antennae are black.

distribution and habitat

The species spreads Eurosiberian and occurs throughout Europe, east to Siberia and across the Central Asian steppes to China. It is widespread in Germany and neighboring countries in the lowlands as well as in the low mountain ranges and the Alps up to 1600 meters above sea level, but only common locally. It is very rare in Great Britain and is found in the heaths of the Surrey , Hampshire and Dorset plains . In northern Germany, the species can be found both in dry sandy heaths and in raised bogs with common heather vegetation .

Way of life

The animals live on the ground, especially on common heather ( Calluna vulgaris ), where they suckle the seeds that fall on the ground. During the ripening period of the seeds in August and September, the adults can also be found on the plants. In addition, other food plants, such as finger herbs ( Potentilla ) and daisy family (Asteraceae) , are occasionally sucked on. Hibernation takes place in the egg on the food plants or in the litter below. The nymphs also overwinter under very favorable conditions . The appearance of the first adults in the year and the mating season is in June. A second generation appears from August or September and their eggs overwinter again. The adults themselves live until October.
