The exclamation O'zapft is! ( Bavarian for Es ist tapped! ) following the tapping of the first beer keg by the incumbent mayor of Munich in the Schottenhamel festival tent , the Oktoberfest in Munich has opened since 1950 . This is followed by twelve gunshots as a signal that beer can be served in all festival tents. The opening takes place every year on the first Saturday after September 15th at 12 noon. According to the traditional cry: O'zapft is! the wish for a peaceful Wiesn (for a peaceful Oktoberfest) is still expressed.

history

After the Mayor of Munich Thomas Wimmer opened the “Munich Electronics Fair 1950” on the Theresienhöhe on September 16, 1950 , he took the shortest route to the Schottenhamel festival tent on the Theresienwiese . There he was already expected by reporters and photographers and carried out the first official tapping of the keg at the Oktoberfest with the mallet and tap that were ready . He dedicated the first mug of beer to the Oktoberfest and the city of Munich, it wasn't until 1980 that the Bavarian Prime Minister and then Chancellor candidate Franz Josef Strauss introduced the tradition, which continues to this day, that the Prime Minister receives his first mug of beer. The legend that the first barrel tapping occurred spontaneously in 1950, after Wimmer had missed his carriage when the Oktoberfest restaurateurs moved in and was therefore taken and persuaded by the landlord Michael Schottenhamel, turned out to be false after a comparison with photographs and newspaper reports. In 1950 and 1951 a barrel with Hofbräu beer was tapped, and since 1952 the barrel tapping has traditionally taken place with beer from the Spatenbräu . In 1960, Lord Mayor Hans-Jochen Vogel , who had been elected a few months earlier, left the barrel tapping to his predecessor Wimmer. It was not until 1964, after Wimmer's death, that Vogel finally took over the ritual, which only then determined that it should be the Mayor of Munich who opened the Oktoberfest.

The best performance was shown by Christian Ude with two strokes each in the years 2005 and 2008 to 2013 and Dieter Reiter in the years 2015 to 2019. Ude is also the record holder for the frequency of tapping with 20 barrel taps, followed by his direct predecessor Georg Kronawitter with 15 barrel taps . In 2018 Dieter Reiter forgot the addition "To a peaceful Oktoberfest".
