occupation

O Candidato Vieira (Eng: "The Candidate Vieira") is a documentary film about the 2001 presidential candidacy of the musician and artist Manuel João Vieira , shot by director Bruno de Almeida .

action

Manuel João Vieira, who became known in Portugal as an actor and musician with the band Ena Pá in 2000 , but is also a visual artist and nightclub operator, ran for president in 2001. He was previously known for his satirical and humorous statements, especially as a band writer, in which he used a formally sophisticated Portuguese and mixed it with fecal language. This also made his appearances as a presidential candidate. These appearances, both on television and in front of enthusiastic groups of people, but also when dealing with legal authorities, resemble cabaret appearances and are often accompanied by musical performances with the three different musical projects of Vieiras.

reception

The director had already shot the documentary about the artist collective 6 = 0 Homeostética , to which Manuel João Vieira belonged. When he decided to run for a sensational presidential candidacy in 2001, Almeida filmed it. Vieira's candidacy was largely perceived as a curiosity and satire, and received widespread attention in the country's mass media. His promises and political demands, such as that every Portuguese should get a Ferrari and be imprisoned once in their life, were also understood as criticism of the country's political operations and its unequal distribution of wealth. Vieira was also supported by well-known personalities, for example António Victorino de Almeida and his daughter Maria de Medeiros . The film documents the various stages of the ultimately unsuccessful candidacy, but in its entire concept it also has the character of a cult film aimed at entertainment . So far, Vieira has stuck to his main campaign slogan "I don't stop until I'm elected" ( Só desisto se for eleito ) and appeared in the media as a potential candidate in all presidential elections. So the documentary has kept its current reference beyond the documentation of the 2001 candidacy.

The film was released on DVD in 2005 in a double edition, together with Almeida's documentation for the 20th anniversary of Vieira's band Ena Pá 2000 .
